Yoga Props, 7 Things You Need to Practice Yoga.

Written By Emily Hartley

Yoga props are handy tools that help you get the most out of your practice. They provide support, improve balance, offer light resistance, and make poses more accessible for people of all levels.

Yoga Props also open the door to greater creativity, allowing you to explore different movements and variations within each pose. This brief introduction gives you a glimpse of the props you’ll find in this article.

1. Yoga mats

A standard yoga mat typically measures approximately 24 inches by 68 inches, but you’re not limited to this size. You can choose a longer or wider mat, a mat with a stickier surface to prevent slipping, or a thicker mat if you prefer more cushioning. If you are practicing regularly, investing in a good-quality mat is definitely worth it.

2. Straps

For a strap, look for one that’s at least 10 feet long and has metal D-rings so you can easily adjust the length. A very long strap can be difficult to handle, so choose one that’s easy to grasp. If a strap seems difficult to hold, everyday items like a belt, necktie, dog leash, sash, or scarf can also serve as alternatives.

3. Yoga Blocks

Yoga blocks come in many shapes, sizes, and materials. They provide stability, support, and structure, making them useful for a variety of poses. It’s helpful to have a variety of blocks so you can adapt your practice to your body’s needs every day.

Bolsters also vary in shape and size, but they are softer than blocks and offer more cushioned support. If you need comfort, choose a bolster, especially when you hold it against your chest; this is a good sign that it will work well for your practice.

4. Blankets

Yoga blankets offer more support and comfort than regular towels. Look for a slightly weighted blanket, such as a wool-blend or traditional Mexican blanket, as heavier blankets retain their shape and provide more comfort when held for extended periods.

A wall is the easiest support you can use because it’s found almost everywhere. It provides support, balance, and resistance, and is especially helpful for deepening stretches or achieving greater comfort. Just make sure you have enough space to move safely.

6. Chair

If you have limited flexibility or mobility, a chair can be a very useful yoga prop. It can support you while standing, help you stay stable for longer periods, and even assist with gentle inversions. A chair is a must when you practice chair yoga. Choose a simple, sturdy chair that has just a seat and backrest, no wheels or armrests.

7. Clothes

Finally, wear clothes that allow you to move around comfortably and easily. Your clothing should never restrict your range of movement. Soft, breathable fabrics with a little stretch are best, allowing you to focus on your practice rather than adjusting your clothes.
